"Meditations" Show as featured artist August 2021 Taking some time out to reflect on our inner worlds has been of interest to many, including myself. There are states to explore and insights to gain as well as a sense of peace and calm in an ever-busier world. In this new work I have merged by lifelong practice of meditation with my travel photos of doors, windows and portals. Rumi, 13th century Persian poet and Sufi mystic, says, "Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love" which was the guiding principle in proceeding with the work. Take a moment to be present, breathe, and enter. |
Hand Painted and Printed Silk Scarves
I have been working for over 30 years creating silk scarves as a way to make something beautiful while exploring different surface design techniques. First I dye and over-dye the white silk scarves, sometimes even going for a third dye application if needed. Then I use silk screens made of my photographs to first take out color and then print on a thin layer of fabric paint. The scarves by this time have been washed and pressed at least three times. They are then finished off with a special fabric softener and given their final press. After years of making scarves it is still of interest to me to discover what happened in the dye bath, choose the images that work with the unique colors, and find the final layer of paint to add to complete the process.

"My work currently involves a variety of explorations in fabric design, including silk painting, natural fiber dyeing,
quilting, silk screening and printing. A textiles degree from UCDavis merged my interest in fine art and fabrics
which has continued to the present. In addition, working with color's endless possibilities and combinations
has fascinated me. My images are many times inspired by the beautiful natural environment of Mendocino
County with it's mountains, vineyards and coastline."
