PLAQUES AND STEPPING STONES FOR YOUR HOME AND GARDEN
ANN MAGLINTE WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS

Artist Statement: In creating Celtic inspired artwork for the garden, we hope to share the
symbolism behind the beauty that speaks of the deep connection of people and the earth.
Ann and Jon have enjoyed collaborating together since they met at San Jose State in the Art and
Design departments. In 1974 they started their business, Midnight Moon, and began showing their
work at Renaissance Faires on the West Coast.
A desire to create artworks inspired by her Celtic heritage led Ann to design the majority of the
work they offer at the gallery. The one continuous line that weaves through Celtic artwork is called
"Celtic Interlace," and symbolizes our connection with the earth; that we are dependent on the earth, and the earth dependent on mankind for our survival.
Incorporating meaningful and symbolic art in the garden can help us create a sacred garden space, perfect for meditation and musings on life.
Most of their designs are conceived and sculpted in clay by Ann. Some pieces take several weeks to carve. Then Jon makes a mold and casts each piece by hand using a special formulation of Portland cement and sand. Careful hand-finishing and colored acid wash stains give their stones and plaques a weathered, antique look. In the final step, each piece is sealed with a masonry sealer to make it weather-proof. Jon also creates one-of-a-kind pieces limited to one edition, that are more abstract, and have elements of the ocean and the coast in their designs.
Ann is an accomplished watercolor artist, with watercolor, pen and ink, and silk painting her favorite mediums. She enjoys painting many different subjects, inspired by the natural beauty of our area. She has been teaching Watercolor for Mendocino College for 16 years, and also at other schools in the area. She has illustrated three books with watercolors, including "Composting Abbie: a Whale of a Story", about the blue whale that was accidentally killed near Mendocino, but was composted, and lives on through the soil that was given to the local schools and community gardens, and 31 illustrations for the very popular "Secrets of the Oak Woodlands," about the trees, plants, birds, and animals that live in our area and the oak woodland area. Both books are available at the gallery. Ann and Jon live with their family in a rambling home, studio, and garden outside of Willits , with their family, two cats and one dog.
