Farewell to our long time member

Ceramist, Satoko Barash
Picture

Satoko will be greatly missed!!

Hand pain from many years of repetitive movement using the wheel is the culprit.

After a good rest, she will be focusing on figurative sculptures, where she started her journey with clay. Stay tuned for a featured show in 2026!

Woodturner, Scott Gaustad

An acquisition of some old growth redwood slabs inspires his current majestic bowls, plates, platters and objects d’art. Knowing he is working on wood from a tree that was hundreds if not thousands of years old is both humbling and rewarding.

“I continue to be amazed at what happens with an unremarkable round of wood.  I cut it in half, put it on the lathe, and let the shape, grain, and nuances in the wood guide me with my tools.  The results are almost magical.”

~ Scott Gaustad

Wood turner, Scott Gaustad took up his craft about 15 years ago. A retired lawyer from Ukiah, he became hooked with turning wood from the first day a client taught him the process.

" I work with clay as a way to make sense of the world, drawing on personal experiences and taking inspiration from emotions, dreams and nature. The forms of my sculptures often play with abstracting the human and mythological figure, while surface details tell stories that are both personal and universal. I love to create work that catches the eye from far away, and becomes more interesting the closer one gets to a piece. My intention is to raise questions and to invoke an emotional response that is unique for everyone. "

"I am an artist and fisherperson. Years of working on boats and walking the streams have contributed to the art I choose to make. I see the ocean in many patterns and textures. I look for stones with these visual elements to create pieces that reflect the beauty of coastal life.

Many people feel a connection to the salmon. I offer a way for them to carry the salmon with them by curing the salmon skin, then setting it in silver with transparent gemstones or glass. My immense respect for the salmon inspires me to honor them in this way.

I love to imagine my patrons wearing their salmon jewelry while walking in the redwood forest or sitting by the ocean."

Laura lives in Fort Bragg. While her career has primarily been in commercial fishing and fisheries fieldwork, art has ebbed and flowed within her life all the while. Eventually the two merged and her focus became ocean and fish oriented jewelry.
