For the upcoming Thanksgiving Fair at the Mendocino Art Center I was able to fire an extra kiln load which allowed me to experiment a little with some new glaze combos. Below are a few, among many, of the pieces I'll be showing next Friday and Saturday, Nov 27 & 28. If you're in and about town, stop on by and say hello.
This is a new 9" plate/bowl form that I've been working for the past three kiln loads. The original, pictured on the right, was commissioned by a friend and since I made extras I kept a few myself. Now they've become my favorite pots to use. I brought a couple down to the gallery this last week and I'm firing a few more this week, experimenting with different glazes, for the upcoming Thanksgiving Fair at the Mendocino Art Center. If you have some free time, stop by my booth. The Fair takes place on Friday and Saturday the day after Thanksgiving. -- Cliff
This is one of the rope-impressed teapots from my last kiln load which I just brought to the gallery. The glaze is Rufus Rust, a tricky mother that needs a buff clay, two thin applications in opposite directions and a firing in moderate reduction to cone 11. It took me about 10 years to figure that out. The cord that I used was a short piece of nylon rope which had its frayed ends subdued with a bit of electrical tape. It would be nice to find some different kinds of rope, with different textures to experiment with, perhaps Kumihimo braids.
Here's some before and after pictures of the kiln load which I fired this past weekend. On the whole it was a fairly decent firing (there are always some disappointments). I like the lower two pots which were tests using a thick application of carbon-trap Shino . . . although I had a few pots where the glaze "crawled" right off the surface because they were loaded too wet. — Cliff Glover
