Artist Statement:
"It’s the wood that has always captured my imagination. Throughout my life I’ve done plenty of hand carving, mostly birds. In 2007, I took the opportunity to dust off an old lathe and put it to use. Usually the wood I use is either driftwood from local beaches or has been found "dead and down" in our coastal forests. I have a tree trimming business and I'll salvage pieces of wood from job sites. I’ve been exploring the range of possibilities within the circular shape that the lathe generates. Carving to preserve the irregular shapes of driftwood or burls and creating surface textures are all current interests. However, it is always the unique features within the wood that dominates what the piece turns into."
