Victoria Bard, long time member of Northcoast Artists Gallery, died last November, and her passing truly leaves a vacuum in our gallery. Artist, craftswoman, and avid surfer, Victoria produced a line of fine jewelry, as well as being the go-to person which everyone depended on. She was aways ready to step up when something needed to be done, always ready to offer a helping hand. What molded and made Victoria was her love of the ocean. The beach was a stone’s throw away from where she lived. She was as much at home sitting atop her surfboard, as she was sitting at her bench, casting, polishing and fabricating new adornments out of silver and gold. The ocean was an endless source of ideas and inspiration. "Patterns in the sand, the shape and texture of shells and seaweed, or the surface of the water, its bubbles and rivulets--all are evocative of the forms that later emerge in my work,” Victoria said. “If I can build a ring or pendant around a particularly nice shell or beach glass, that's double the fun!" Please join us this May 2017 to celebrate the life of our dear friend and beautiful artist, Victoria Bard, at Northcoast Artists Gallery, 362 Main Street, Fort Bragg, CA. Two local artists join forces for a limited edition collaborative ceramic show at Northcoast Artists Gallery for the month of June. Havana Davidson and Solange Roberdeau -- artists of different mediums -- find common ground and inspiration in materiality and abstract forms from the natural world. Ceramicist, Davidson, chose a natural red clay body and strong geometric forms when making this body of work specifically to compliment Roberdeau's bold and oftentimes minimal design sensibilities. Roberdeau utilizes this three dimensional framework to expand her otherwise drawing-based investigation of form and perception. The resulting collection of plates, bowls, pitchers and cups is aesthetically energetic and fresh without compromising it's utilitarian functionality. It is earthy with a minimal color palette delivered in layers and highlighted with glints of gold luster. Collaborations in Red Clay will be on display from May 31st – July 2nd .

Unlike most photographers who have shifted completely over to a digital format, our new guest member, Kyle Forrest Burns, captures his images with a large format Hasselblad camera, preferring old analogue ways in an otherwise digital era. "My photographic aesthetic yearns for the possibility and the potential of nostalgia." Burns explains. "In the high-definition digital age of photography, I alternatively capture images on film, evoking in my photographs a sense of melancholy and wistfulness. Films susceptibility to varied outcomes lends my art to a look that cannot be recreated, while capturing a timeless feeling that leave viewers longing for the past." Burns, previously of Chico, CA, has recently started a farm at the historic Nye Ranch, in an effort to grow a steady stream of vegetables and flowers for the local economy. Located right off on Mendocino coast, with its perfect maritime climate, the ranch is a great outpost where he can venture out using the subtle coastal light as a perfect foil for his kind of photography. "I have a deep appreciation and fascination for the history in the landscape and I do my best to awaken that sentimental feeling in my photographs, " Burns says of the nostalgia he would like to evoke within all of us.
